Sundays + YouTube: Watching Painters Paint
I have a confession: I L.O.V.E. to watch painters paint. Is it just me or do you love it too?
Sundays are usually my day to lay around and watch video after video of painters I love create their artwork. It’s soothing, it expands my mind, and it promotes flow so the next time I go paint, I’ve brought that flow with me.
I also love to hear them talk about their process. And here’s something interesting I’ve noticed: when people commission me to create a piece of art for them, they naturally are very involved in the process because that’s how I make sure that people get something they love. All along the way, I involve them and get feedback. As the creative process unfolds and they see how the feedback they give me is showing up in the painting and directing what happens next, they get more and more excited and invested. When it’s done, it really feels like their painting. That is truly the joy of commissioning a painting. The painting below is a commission I just finished and I made a video of it from start to finish—I took hours and hours of footage, sped it up and made 27 minutes of condensed footage where I talk about the process of creating something out of nothing, and how clients are involved in my commission process. Like I said in the last Art Talk article about art materials, it must be human nature for us to be curious about process + materials, because I frequently get asked questions like,
“What did you use to make this painting?”
or “Is that paint or some kind of other material?”
or “What did you use to get that effect?”
It’s for this reason that I have wanted to start my own YouTube Channel for awhile, but it’s an undertaking and I just couldn’t carve out the time…until now.
I’m so excited that I made it happen because I LOVE creating videos of my process and then going back through to comment on how they unfold, what my choices are and why, and what materials I use. I find this ‘recap’ of the experience to be really instructional for me and helps me to document what’s important for me to take forward into my future work, and what I can leave behind. Here is one of my most popular videos if you’re interested in tasting what you’ll find on the channel.
