Breakthrough
SIZE 30” x 30” x 1.5”
mixed media collage on canvas
Includes a dark wood floater frame with black interior (see close ups in pictures), pre-wired so it is ready to hang right out of the box. This substantial frame is made by a local craftsman. If you would rather do your own framing, just let me know and I’ll only send the painting to you.
This painting is made with acrylic paint and glazes, acrylic inks, collage paper, and various mark making tools like Art Graf tailor’s chalk.
About This Painting: This painting, Breakthrough, was literally that. Various elements and themes I had been exploring throughout the series came together in the last 3 pieces, this being the one in which I truly recognized and felt it. This new place represented by this painting will be my starting point for what comes next. Since I’ve been painting well over 20 years, I’m now at the place where I can recognize creative cycles, tone down my emotional reactions to them, and be more available to the work. It’s also more satisfying to recognize breakthroughs as part of a cycle and let go of the child-like wish for every painting to be a breakthrough—every one plays a crucial part and the places leading up to breakthroughs are incredibly interesting and satisfying.
This piece was based on a small 5×7 study that’s also in this series called ‘Unspoiled Country’. It was quite an adventure to scale an idea from 5×7 to 30×30, and one I could have only been able to accomplish because I had been learning to scale the entire process through smaller incremental increases in size. It was a wonderful feeling, here at the end, to look at a small study and just know what I had to alter in tools, materials, and the physical way I move as well.
